Our Story
Our purpose, and how New Zealand business has shaped the Pledge into what it is today.
Our History
The Biosecurity Business Pledge was officially launched in October 2019, marking a significant step toward a more proactive approach to biosecurity in Aotearoa. Lead by Minister Damien O’Connor and joined by a diverse group of New Zealand business leaders, the Biosecurity Business Pledge was developed to strengthen the partnership between government and businesses in protecting our environment, economy, and way of life.
The initiative began with 57 founding signatory businesses and supporting organisations, all committed to collectively improving biosecurity practices across our country. These businesses recognise that maintaining the country’s biosecurity system is a collective responsibility and that proactivity is key to reducing and managing risks associated with unwanted pests and diseases. This commitment aligns with the goals of the Biosecurity 2025 Strategy creating a “biosecurity team of 4.7 million” by involving every New Zealander in protecting our country.
Our Purpose
The Biosecurity Business Pledge was designed to enhance collaboration between businesses, Biosecurity New Zealand, and the wider community. We encourage businesses to adopt proactive biosecurity measures, share knowledge, and work together to ensure the ongoing health of our economy and unique ecosystems. By supporting better biosecurity outcomes, the Pledge also contributes to the productivity and sustainability goals in New Zealand’s Fit for a Better World strategy.
The inaugural Pledge Members Forum was scheduled for early 2020 to further conversation between businesses committed to the Pledge and Biosecurity New Zealand. Unfortunately, the arrival of Covid-19 delayed this event and paused the work until the end of the year. However, our dedication to strengthening biosecurity practices did not waver. Since then, we have continued to build momentum and expand our network, supporting businesses in their ongoing efforts to improve biosecurity and contribute to a safer, more resilient Aotearoa.
Today, the Biosecurity Business Pledge continues to grow, with a diverse range of businesses joining the movement to help protect our country, our people, and our livelihood. We are proud to be a part of this effort and remain committed to fostering a collaborative approach to business biosecurity practice that benefits us all.
